About Sodium & Sugar

We get asked about these a lot. Here's the full picture.

Sodium

Salt is a necessary ingredient in spice blends — it balances and amplifies the other flavors. Our blends range from 405mg to 710mg sodium per tablespoon, with one exception: our Turkish blend at 1,770mg. We're working on bringing that number down without losing what makes it one of our most popular blends.

Each packet contains 6 tablespoons total. For context: the FDA's recommended daily sodium limit is 2,300mg, a tablespoon of soy sauce has about 900mg, and a typical bottled marinade has 300-500mg per tablespoon with far fewer beneficial ingredients.

If you're watching sodium closely, our French blend (405mg), Korean blend (440mg), and Thai blend (460mg) are your best options.

Sugar
Seven of our ten blends contain zero sugar. The three exceptions use small amounts of traditional sugars that are authentic to their respective cuisines: Korean (1.56g raw sugar — used in traditional Korean barbecue seasoning), Jamaican (1.8g brown sugar — a staple in jerk seasoning), and Turkish (3g jaggery powder — an unrefined cane sugar used in Turkish cooking). For reference, a single tablespoon of ketchup contains about 4g of sugar. We use the minimum amount needed for the authentic flavor profile.

Everything Else
Nine of our ten blends are gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan. The Lebanese blend contains za'atar which may have traces of wheat, nuts, and sesame seeds, so it is not gluten-free. No preservatives, no artificial flavors, no anti-caking agents, no fillers in any blend. Every ingredient in every blend is listed on this page and on each product page.
